The first Roman publishers emerged during the first century BC. Book merchants paid teams of slaves to copy out selected manuscripts. These were then sold in shops. There was no copyright law in the Roman Empire and so publishers did not have to pay money to the author of the book.. The only way writers could make a good living out of their work was to be sponsored by a wealthy Roman. Printing, traditionally, a technique for applying under pressure a certain quantity of coloring agent onto a specified surface to form a body of text or an illustration. Certain modern processes for reproducing texts and illustrations, however, are no longer dependent on the mechanical concept of pressure.

For reading purposes, stick to a good, well-known serif font (like Times New Roman), or slab serif font (like Courier). The reason I say this is because - regardless of your manuscript looking like it was written with a typewriter font - serif fonts are much easier to read in print than sans-serif fonts (like Arial). The type which is similar to today's Roman type was first designed by two brothers, Johannes and Vindelinus de Spira of Venice, who obtained the five-year sole right to use it in However, first Johannes and then Vindelinus died the following year, and a different version was created based on their type, i.e. " N. Jenson's typeface.".
